NEW YORK – We use millions of them every year, but the mayor is now looking at ways to lower the amount of plastic bags the city uses. If he has his way, you’ll pay up to six cents per bag every time you use plastic, an idea not sitting well with many New Yorkers.
“New Yorkers are already suffering,” council member Simcha Felder said. “This is one more way to hurt them.”
The proposal would raise millions for the city’s cash starved budget and if more consumers used re-usable cloth, it would also help keep tons of plastic out of landfills.
“They are polluting, maybe this will discourage people from using plastic,” said one New Yorker. “Adding fees for the use of plastic is already common place in other countries.”
But the owner of an Upper West Side supermarket says it will ultimately hurt customers.
“In the end this will up prices, and hurt the customer” said Mark Mandelberg, owner of West Side Market.
The proposal still faces legal challenges ahead, and is far from in the bag.
