The Suburban House restaurant was heavily damaged by fire. The Suburban House has been a rich part of Baltimore’s Jewish community for nearly half a century, but the restaurant was heavily damaged by fire late Wednesday.
Ron Matz returned to the Reisterstown Road landmark and spoke to the owners who are vowing to re-open.
From Sky Eye Chopper 13 you could see the heavy smoke, Thursday the heartbreak could be felt on Reisterstown Road as the owners of the suburban house returned to survey the damage at their popular restaurant and deli.
The two-alarm fire started in a storage area in the rear. Tables still set in the main dining room, but there’s heavy smoke damage. Owner Mark Horowitz vows to re-open if the building is found to be structurally sound.
“They’re going to check the structural aspects of the building. If it’s not damaged in any way and can be cleaned up, of course we’re going to re-build. We’re in it for the long haul,” said Mark Horowitz, Suburban House Owner.
The wall of fame and its familiar faces survived, as well as the menus. Many customers watched in shock as the building burned.
“Well it’s an institution, obviously, everybody in the area knows it and they’ve been here, its one of a kind,” said Paul Adler, customer.
The Suburban House is much more than just a restaurant, its been part of the fabric of the Pikesville community for 43 years.
“People love coming here, because they come in and they look at another table and say, ‘you know what I went to elementary school with that guy over there, I haven’t seen him in 50 years,’” said Horowitz. “We’re not a fancy restaurant, we’re a deli restaurant. We’ve been here a long time; we’re the anchor of Reisterstown road.”
The restaurant is one of Baltimore’s best and the owners vow to serve up the corned beef and Matzo Ball soup once again.
“We’re a landmark, we’re like Jewish mothers, we like to feed people,” said Horowitz.
The owners say they are hoping to re-locate temporarily, to try to do their catering at another location in the area.
“God forbid if we go, I hate to say what would happen to these next three blocks, they won’t survive. We bring the traffic here and we’re good to the customers, the neighborhood and the community,” said Horowitz.
No one was injured in the fire, which is believed to have been electrical in nature.

I m so sad about this.
Max and I can’t wait for the reopening, we want our matzo ball soup, and everything else, all the way to nova omelets.
Hurry, rebuild, we ll be there.

Is the catering part of your business open yet? I will be needing food for a Shiva house, and I don’t want to go anywhere else. Noone takes care of a Shiva house better than the generous portions and reasonable prices like Suburban House.
